Over 50 people were kidnapped by armed bandits on 1st August 2025 in Sabon Garin Damri village, Zamfara State, northwest Nigeria, according to a UN-linked conflict report. This marks the first mass abduction in the area this year and shows a growing trend of large-scale attacks. The crisis, which began as a clash between herders and farmers, has now turned into organized crime. Bandits loot villages, kidnap for ransom, and tax local people. Despite a ransom payment, 33 captives were killed last month, along with three babies. These attacks worsen hunger as farming is disrupted. Armed gangs have grown since 2011, partly due to weapons from the Sahel region. Nigerian troops recently killed 95 bandits, but the military is overstretched. Bandits are now working with jihadist groups, increasing violence. Some states are recruiting militias to help fight back. The situation remains dangerous for many rural communities.
