South Sudan’s main opposition party, SPLM-IO, rejected President Salva Kiir’s recent call for dialogue, saying it was not sincere. The opposition demanded the release of their detained political and military leaders as a sign of true commitment to peace. President Kiir had called for unity and reconciliation during the reopening of parliament, saying peace was still possible. However, tensions remain high, especially after Vice President Riek Machar, the SPLM-IO leader, was placed under house arrest following attacks on army bases in March. Many opposition members have since fled the country. The SPLM-IO accused the government of continuing military attacks and targeting Nuer civilians. Civil society and the United Nations have also expressed concern. The UN warned that the 2018 peace agreement, which ended a five-year civil war, is close to collapse due to violence, repression, and outside military involvement. They say the peace process is failing and the country is facing a serious crisis.
Pray for unity and oneness of mind for all the leaders of the warring parties in South Sudan to find a peaceful end to the internal conflicts. Pray for peace and justice to prevail in the country (The Holy Bible, Psalm 33:11).
Pray for the release of all the imprisoned political and military leaders in South Sudan. Pray for divine protection upon all the South Sudanese people, especially the Nuer civilians, from violent attacks (The Holy Bible, Psalm 57:1).
