Maldives: The drug court has disclosed that 18% of individuals who have undergone treatment for drug addiction relapse into drug use. The drug legislation in the Maldives was enacted and ratified on December 21, 2011, leading to the establishment of the Drug Court under this law. Statistics from the Drug Court indicate that over 11,700 cases have been brought before it since its inception, with 94% of those cases involving men, 3% involving women, and 2% involving minors.
Among the 5,148 individuals who completed drug treatment and received final rulings, 946 cases have been reopened. However, 4,202 individuals, or 82%, have not returned to court after treatment. To date, the Drug Court has sentenced 2,389 individuals to prison, including 498 cases involving repeat offenders who had previously been incarcerated by the court.
- Lord, we pray with heavy hearts, lifting up those who are struggling with addiction and the challenges they face in their journey to recovery. We thank you for the establishment of the Drug Court and the dedicated efforts to help individuals regain their lives. We pray for healing for those who have sought treatment, that they may find strength to resist the pull of relapse and fully embrace the path of recovery (The Holy Bible, 2 Corinthians 5:17).
- Lord, we pray for the struggles and pains that come with addiction. We pray for the 4,202 individuals who have successfully completed their treatment and have not returned to court. May they continue to walk in the light of Your truth and find the support they need to stay on this path. We ask that You surround them with a caring community and guidance, enabling them to build a life free from the grips of addiction (The Holy Bible, Isaiah 41:10).
