Western Sahara: The long-standing issue of decolonizing Western Sahara took the spotlight as the Special Committee on Decolonization listened to passionate statements from both petitioners and delegates, showcasing differing perspectives. While some emphasized the United Nations’ role in addressing this matter and expressed support for Morocco’s claim to sovereignty over Western Sahara, praising its development initiatives, others advocated for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
They called for urgent international action to uphold humanitarian law, including the establishment of a UN protection mechanism for the Tindouf camps, where fundamental freedoms are routinely suppressed and individuals are held against their will. Additionally, they accused the group of recruiting child soldiers, breaching international ceasefires, and maintaining connections with criminal networks throughout the Sahel.
- Lord, we pray for the Sahrawi people and all those affected by the conflict in Western Sahara. Seek God’s guidance and intervention to bring about a just and peaceful resolution that honors their right to self-determination (The Holy Bible, Exodus 14:14).
- Lord, we pray for international leaders and organizations involved in the discussions regarding Western Sahara, that they may be inspired to take decisive action that upholds humanitarian law and protects the vulnerable, especially children (The Holy Bible, Psalm 82:3).
