One of the highest regions of the world and home to Mount Everest was shaken Tuesday by a massive earthquake. It could be felt in Tibet, Nepal, and China. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the earthquake as a magnitude 7.1. About 150 aftershocks were recorded in the nine hours after the quake. A confirmed death toll of 126 and a minimum of 188 people are reported injured on the Tibet side of the border. It is a sparsely populated part of the country, otherwise many more individuals would have been affected.
It is the dead of winter with heavy snowfalls which contribute to the difficulty of rescue missions. Workers have been erecting rows of tents lined with quilted padding to keep out the cold. Packages of food have also been distributed to survivors. Tibet’s Emergency Management Department reported that their focus has now shifted from search and rescue to resettlement and reconstruction.
China has a very territorial view of Tibet, claiming that it is a part of China. Many Tibetans, however, are very loyal to the Dalai Lama and cling to the belief that Tibet is a separate nation. This devastated area in the midst of winter’s grip needs much prayer and help in rebuilding.
Let us pray for:
Much needed supplies, including, clothing, food, and medicines to quickly reach suffering Tibetans (The Bible, James 4:17).
The speedy construction of both temporary and permanent housing to prevent further devastation by the effects of winter’s deep chill (The Bible, Hebrews 4:16).
Christian Believers and missionaries to take this opportunity to talk to unbelievers about God’s gift of salvation to them through the salvation provided by Jesus Christ (The Bible, Matthew 24:7).
