Libya: Hanna Tetteh, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Libya, highlighted the importance of the Libyan government providing legal and civil protections for women. This support is crucial for women to fulfill their ambitions and play a significant role in the country’s development.
Her comments were made in response to a question about women’s issues in Libya during an interview with the official UN website. The UN Mission shared a portion of this interview in celebration of Libya’s National Women’s Day.
Tetteh pointed out that “most African countries are patriarchal societies, and Libya is no different,” emphasizing that societal norms often favor men over women. “This is the reality we are confronting and working to change,” she stated.
- Lord, we pray for Hanna Tettah, the special representative of the UN in Libya; give her the courage and strength she wants to make a significant change in numerous women’s lives in Libya (The Holy Bible, Deuteronomy 31:6).
- Lord, we pray for the softening of hearts to recognize the dignity and worth of women, ending all forms of prejudice and discrimination. May the legal system in Libya be free from corruption and bias, ensuring equal treatment for all, including women (The Holy Bible, Psalms 27:1).
