MALDIVES: The phrase “iPad kids” has become a common, though concerning, way to describe a generation that has been glued to screens since they were little. We’ve all noticed them: the quiet child in a restaurant, eating while fixated on a YouTube video; the toddler in a stroller, who suddenly wakes up when the ‘Cocomelon’ theme song plays. What seems like an easy way to keep kids entertained can actually lead to what some call “brain rot,” which is a slow decline in mental activity. While it’s tempting to blame the kids, this issue is part of a larger problem—adults also struggle with screen addiction, which makes constant digital engagement seem normal. Research shows that “brain rot” is not just a trendy term but a real concern for the mental and emotional health of children in the Maldives. Being addicted to screens from such a young age can lead to problems with thinking and learning.
- Lord, we ask for awareness among parents and caregivers regarding the impact of excessive screen time on children. Grant them wisdom to set healthy boundaries and engage their children in meaningful activities that foster development and connection (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 4:23).
- Lord, we pray for the mental and emotional health of children affected by screen addiction. May they discover joy in the world around them and develop strong, healthy minds. Help us to provide nurturing environments that encourage creativity, learning, and interpersonal connections (The Holy Bible, 1 Corinthians 10:31).
