A cholera outbreak started in South Sudan in September 2024, worsening an already serious humanitarian crisis caused by violence, flooding, and hunger. Since October, over 80,000 cholera cases and 1,400 deaths have been reported. Other diseases like mpox, hepatitis, and measles are also spreading. South Sudan’s government and partners met to address the emergency and agreed to improve humanitarian access, water and sanitation, and vaccination efforts. The rainy season, which causes floods, is starting soon, making the situation more dangerous because floods spread cholera by contaminating water. Cholera is caused by drinking dirty water or eating contaminated food. It causes severe diarrhea but can be treated with oral rehydration salts if caught early. South Sudan’s weak health and water systems struggle to cope. The country needs $1.69 billion for humanitarian help, but has received only a small part. Officials say cholera control and flood preparation must be urgent national priorities.
Jehovah Rapha, we pray for Your divine healing power upon those suffering from the Cholera outbreak and other diseases in South Sudan. We pray for the South Sudanese people to have immediate access to healthcare and other essential resources they need (The Holy Bible, Jeremiah 33:6).
Pray for wise counsel for the authorities to implement immediate preventive measures to safeguard the safety of the people during the upcoming rainy season in South Sudan. Pray for divine protection upon all the South Sudanese people from floods and diseases (The Holy Bible, Psalm 57:1).
