SOMALIA: Somalia will add Swahili, the common language of East Africa, to its national curriculum, according to an announcement from the president. Currently, English is the main language used for teaching most subjects in secondary schools across the country, and Arabic is the only other required second language. However, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud stated that schools and universities should also include Swahili in their programs. He made this announcement at a summit for the East African Community (EAC) happening in Mogadishu, the capital city. Somalia officially joined this eight-nation trading group last year to help improve its economy after three decades of conflict.

  • Lord, we pray that the inclusion of Swahili in Somalia’s national curriculum will enhance communication and understanding among East African nations, fostering unity and collaboration. May this educational reform lead to increased opportunities for the youth and contribute positively to the nation’s development (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 1:5).
  • Lord, we pray that you will bless Somalia with peace and stability as it continues to rebuild its economy and society. Pray that the nation’s focus on education will lead to a brighter future and help heal the wounds of the past (The Holy Bible, Jeremiah 33:3).
