SENEGAL: Senegal’s health officials have reported 17 deaths linked to a significant outbreak of Rift Valley Fever (RVF), marking the country’s worst situation in many years. Rift Valley Fever is a viral disease spread by mosquitoes that mainly impacts livestock, including cattle, goats, and sheep. Mosquito bites or contact with sick animals, particularly during slaughter or birthing, can infect humans. Although most infections are mild, serious cases can lead to brain swelling, eye damage, or hemorrhagic fever, which may be deadly. The World Health Organization points out that herders, farmers, and workers in slaughterhouses face the highest risk. Experts believe that climate change—characterized by alternating heavy rainfall and high temperatures—is creating perfect conditions for mosquito breeding, raising the chances of outbreaks. Health officials are now calling for vaccination of livestock and improved mosquito control measures to help prevent the disease from spreading.

  • Lord, we lift up the families and communities affected by the Rift Valley Fever outbreak in Senegal. We ask for Your healing touch for those who are suffering and for Your comfort to envelop the grieving families. May they find strength and hope in You (The Holy Bible, Psalm 34:18).
  • Lord, we seek Your wisdom and guidance for health officials as they implement measures to control the outbreak. We pray for effective vaccination programs and mosquito control efforts to protect livestock and vulnerable populations. Grant them clarity and success in their initiatives (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 16:3).
