ALGERIA: Experts attribute the rise in identity theft and online scams in Algeria to an increase in internet usage. By 2025, there could be around 36.2 million internet users, which is about 76.9% of the population. Social media sites like Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram have become hotspots for sharing fake job offers and fraudulent applications.
The rise of mobile phones and the widespread use of smartphones have sped up these issues. Cybersecurity experts point out that scammers often target young people who are unemployed and looking for jobs in a digital economy.
In response, authorities are stepping up awareness campaigns through social media and traditional outlets to teach people safe online habits. Security services and the National Gendarmerie are actively working to break down fraud networks and are encouraging everyone to use only official websites when looking for job or service information.
- Lord, we pray that God grants protection to individuals, especially the youth, from falling victim to scams and identity theft in the digital space. May they acquire the wisdom and discernment necessary to identify fraudulent schemes (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 14:15).
- Lord, we pray for the authorities working to combat cybercrime in Algeria, that they may be strengthened and diligent in their efforts to dismantle fraud networks and promote online safety. May their campaigns effectively reach and educate the populace (The Holy Bible, Psalm 28:7).
