Despite growing efforts to promote inclusive education in Bhutan, students with disabilities continue to face significant barriers in pursuing higher education beyond Class 12. A lack of essential support services in colleges and universities such as trained sign language interpreters, deaf support officers, and counsellors proficient in Bhutanese sign language means that many students with disabilities, particularly those who are deaf or blind, are effectively excluded from continuing their studies. In the past five years, only 23 students with disabilities have been admitted to 11 colleges under the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB); of these, 9 have graduated, while 14 are still pursuing their studies. The data underscores both the progress made and the pressing need for expanded accessibility and inclusive services in higher education.
Abba Father, we ask that educational institutions in Bhutan and be moved to provide equal access and adequate support for students with disabilities. May resources like interpreters, assistive technology, and trained counselors be made widely available so no student is left behind (The Bible, Proverbs 31:8).
Lord, strengthen and uplift students with disabilities who are striving to complete their education against many odds. Grant them wisdom, and favor in their studies. Let their journey inspire change and open doors for others to follow (The Bible, Philippians 4:13).
