Churches in South Sudan are praying continuously from June 10 to August 18 for peace and development under the theme “Fulfill your good promises, oh LORD.” This comes as political tensions rise between President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar, who was detained for allegedly planning a rebellion. Fighting has caused deaths and displaced 65,000 people in Upper Nile State, while over 2.3 million South Sudanese refugees have fled to neighboring countries. Churches are also helping refugees from Sudan’s war. The prayers mark 70 years since the start of the conflict in Sudan, which eventually led to South Sudan’s independence in 2011. People hope for peace and a better future. The church leaders want everyone to pray and work for peace in family, government, education, health, and other areas of life.
Merciful Father, open Your eyes and see the desolations in South Sudan and hear the cry of the South Sudanese people for peace and deliverance. Do not delay for Your own sake, our God, to help Your nation, and Your creations in the country (The Holy Bible, Daniel 9).
Pray for the end of the conflict and violence in South Sudan. Pray for the LORD’s peace to prevail in the nation. Pray for divine protection upon all the South Sudanese people from violence (The Holy Bible, Psalm 72:14).
