Somalia: Somalia marked the 65th anniversary of its independence on July 1, 1960, along with the unification of its northern and southern regions. This celebration occurs against the backdrop of a 34-year conflict and ongoing political divisions that hinder national unity. In the capital, Mogadishu, major streets were closed to traffic, and security measures were intensified. Military vehicles paraded through the city, while helicopters distributed leaflets congratulating citizens on the occasion. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud laid a wreath at the Daljirka Dahsoon (Tomb of the Unknown Soldier) near the presidential palace.

Although the anniversary was celebrated in various parts of the country, the self-declared republic of Somaliland did not take part. Somaliland, which declared its independence in 1991, has consistently refused to recognize July 1 as a day of celebration, arguing that the 1960 unification was unsuccessful and reaffirming its position as a de facto independent state. It continues to pursue international recognition as a sovereign nation. This year’s celebrations occur as Somalia remains entrenched in conflict, with the federal government and several regional states at odds, ongoing tensions, and no resolution in sight. Political fragmentation and security issues continue to obstruct efforts toward national reconciliation and state-building.

  • Lord, we pray for healing and unity among the different regions of Somalia, that the spirit of cooperation and reconciliation will prevail to overcome divisions and conflicts. Ask God to guide the leaders and people in their pursuit of peace. (The Holy Bible, Psalm 133:1).
  • Lord, we pray for lasting peace and stability in Somalia, that the ongoing tensions and conflicts may be resolved, leading to a secure environment for all citizens. Ask for God’s protection over those who seek to build a better future for the nation (The Holy Bible, Psalms 29.11).
