Nepal: Each year, it is estimated that between 20,000 and 40,000 individuals are bitten by snakes, with around 2,700 fatalities, primarily among women and children in the Tarai region. This equates to roughly seven deaths daily. However, in rural areas, where the majority of bites happen and healthcare services are limited, few people are aware of how to react appropriately. Many resort to misguided practices that can worsen the situation. Recently, increasing temperatures have pushed venomous snakes into the hills and mountains. This year alone, Sukraraj Hospital has treated over 350 snakebite cases from the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding districts. Unfortunately, grassroots awareness initiatives, such as door-to-door campaigns that could educate people on how to respond in those critical first moments, are largely lacking. Experts claim that the government has taken minimal action. While access to healthcare is a recognized issue, experts emphasize that awareness of first aid is lacking and represents the most easily addressable aspect of Nepal’s response to snakebites.

  • Lord, we pray for increased awareness and education regarding snakebite prevention and first aid in rural communities. Ask for the development of effective grassroots initiatives to help individuals respond properly to bites, minimizing harm and fatalities (The Holy Bible, Hosea 4:6).
  • Lord, we pray for improved healthcare access in rural areas and for government action to address the lack of response resources for snakebite victims. May resources and training be provided to healthcare workers and communities to adequately treat and support those affected (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 2:6).
