Senegal: The Committee to Protect Journalists urges the Senegalese government to promptly free news commentator Bachir Fofana, who has been ordered by a judge to remain in detention until July 9 as his trial continues. Fofana faces charges for allegedly publishing false information regarding a vehicle purchase contract for the National Assembly. The government has a troubling track record of prosecuting journalists for disseminating false news. It is concerning that the Senegalese state is once again criminalizing journalism. Fofana is the second commentator detained in the last three months on similar charges, following Abdou Nguer’s arrest in April. The Senegalese authorities must release both journalists immediately and ensure that media professionals can work without fear of retaliation.
- Lord, we pray for the immediate release of Bachir Fofana and Abdou Nguer, asking that the Senegalese authorities recognize the importance of press freedom and protect the rights of journalists. May justice prevail, and may those who seek to silence the truth be held accountable (The Holy Bible, Psalm 18:28).
- Lord, we pray for the safety and courage of all journalists in Senegal and around the world, that they may continue to report the news honestly and freely without fear of persecution. May they be granted wisdom and strength in their vital role of informing the public (The Holy Bible, John 8:32).
