Less than two years after taking power, Niger’s junta leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani, is struggling to stop rising jihadist violence. He had promised to bring security after the 2023 coup, but attacks by al-Qaeda-linked JNIM and Islamic State fighters have increased. In May, about 100 soldiers were killed in two attacks near Mali and Benin. Army chief General Barmou nearly resigned over poor resources and clashed with Defense Minister Salifou Mody, who is accused of lacking a clear plan. Tiani now relies on close allies like intelligence chief Balla-Arabé, who blames France for problems instead of giving real solutions. In May, Tiani even accused France’s DGSE of plotting against him. As the economy weakens and jihadists enter gold-rich areas like Samira, the public is questioning the junta’s rule. Though still working with Mali and Burkina Faso, many in Niger feel military rule has failed to deliver real safety or progress.

Pray for wise counsel for the authorities to curb the terrorist attacks in Niger. Pray for divine wisdom for Nigerien leaders to strengthen the security system of the nation (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 8:14-15).

Pray for oneness and unity among the authorities in Niger to safeguard the safety of the people and the natural resources of the nation. Pray for divine protection and peace for all the people in the country (The Holy Bible, Psalm 140:1).
