MALDIVES: The media community in the Maldives has come together to oppose the proposed establishment of a new regulator that would have extensive powers to impose fines and shut down news organizations, signaling concerns over a potential new crackdown as the government dismissed calls to abandon the “media control bill.” Parliament held a special session and wrapped up initial discussions on the widely criticized legislation. The ruling party, with its supermajority, moved forward with the media and broadcasting regulation bill, passing it with a 49-12 vote, after which it was sent to a committee and the Parliament went into recess until October. Outside the People’s Majlis in Malé, journalists demonstrated against the expected transition from self-regulation to government oversight.

  • Lord, we pray that the voices of journalists and media organizations in the Maldives will be protected and that they may operate freely without government interference. Ask for wisdom and courage for those standing against unjust laws that threaten press freedom (The Holy Bible, John 8:32).
  • Lord, we pray for the leaders of the Maldives, asking that they would seek justice and uphold the rights of their citizens, including the importance of a free press. Pray for a change of heart among those who support oppressive regulations (The Holy Bible, Isaiah 1:17).
