Japan: In Japan, the number of work-related mental disorder cases increased by 172 in fiscal 2024, reaching a total of 1,055, which is the highest figure recorded for the sixth consecutive year, according to the government. Harassment from superiors was identified as the primary cause. Among these cases, 88 involved suicides or suicide attempts during the fiscal year that concluded in March, an increase of nine from the previous year, as reported by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare. Physical and verbal harassment from superiors accounted for 224 cases of mental disorders, while significant changes in workload or job responsibilities were cited in 119 cases. Customer abuse, which includes physical and verbal violence against employees, was the third most prevalent cause, with 108 cases reported, 78 of which involved women. Starting in fiscal 2023, harassment from customers has been recognized as a qualifying incident for workers’ compensation related to mental stress.
- Lord, we pray for those affected by work-related mental disorders, including those who have experienced harassment and those struggling with thoughts of suicide. Ask for God’s healing hand and comfort to be upon them during this difficult time (The Holy Bible, Psalm 147:3).
- Lord, we pray for positive changes in workplace environments, that employers and authorities will take necessary actions to protect employees from harassment and abuse. Ask for wisdom and strength to work towards creating a safe and supportive working environment for all (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 31:8).
