In the first half of 2025, Iraq’s Interior Ministry reported the dismantling of over 60 sex trafficking networks and the arrest of 82 individuals accused of practicing sorcery and fortune-telling—offenses still punishable under Iraqi law. Colonel Abbas al-Bahadli, spokesperson for the Ministry, revealed that the Federal Intelligence and Investigations Agency uncovered 62 sex exploitation rings, 9 organ trafficking groups, 15 forced labor operations, 4 child-selling networks, and 6 organized begging syndicates. Despite government efforts, including a 2017 directive to shut down offices tied to witchcraft and spiritual fraud, such practices persist—often fueled by economic hardship, societal instability, and emotional distress. Women, in particular, are more vulnerable to being drawn into sorcery and fortune-telling, frequently due to a lack of access to psychological and social support systems. This large-scale operation reflects Iraq’s ongoing struggle against human exploitation and spiritual deception amidst growing socio-economic challenges.
Abba Father, we pray for every man, woman, and child rescued from trafficking and exploitation in Iraq. Heal their wounds—both visible and hidden—and restore their dignity. Raise up safe places and compassionate helpers who will walk with them toward hope and freedom (The Bible, Psalm 9:9).
Lord, we ask for Your light to shine in places overshadowed by spiritual deception and fear. Bring truth, clarity, and peace to those misled by witchcraft and fortune-telling. Equip communities with wisdom, support, and the power of the gospel to bring lasting transformation (The Bible, Ephesians 5:11).
