Armed militias attacked internal security troops in Syria’s Sweida province, killing an officer and wounding others. The attackers also bombarded surrounding villages, violating a recent ceasefire. The clash started in mid-July between tribal fighters and Druze groups. The Syrian government deployed troops to halt the violence, and Israel conducted airstrikes, explaining that it desired to defend the Druze community. A ceasefire was eventually worked out with assistance from the United States and temporarily cut the violence. But the recent assault on 03rd August showed that the peace did not last. Syria’s interim government has then established a committee to probe what occurred. This renewed outbreak of violence is a great challenge for interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, particularly after previous deadly fighting in Syria’s coastal area last March. The situation is still tense, and more combat is ahead if the ceasefire can’t be reinstated.
