SOMALIA: Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, the former president of Somalia and an opposition leader, has claimed that the current government is allowing Al-Shabaab to regain power by focusing on controversial land sales instead of national security. He stated that the militant group is quickly gaining ground while the government deals with what he calls illegal transfers of public land to rich businesses. In a serious evaluation of Somalia’s worsening security situation, Sharif warned that Al-Shabaab is taking control as the national army weakens. He criticized President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for not effectively leading the country during this time of rising insecurity and mentioned that the government’s actions have lowered the spirits of frontline soldiers.
- Lord, we pray for God’s protection over Somalia and for the national leadership to be guided in making decisions that prioritize the safety of its citizens. Ask for wisdom in addressing the security threats posed by Al-Shabaab (The Holy Bible, Psalm 27:1).
- Lord, we pray for encouragement and resilience for the Somali national army and all frontline soldiers. May they find strength in challenging times and remain steadfast in their mission to protect the nation (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 18:10).
