Niger had heavy rains that caused massive floods, killing a minimum of 47 individuals and displacing over 56,000. Authorities indicate that 30 people died when their houses collapsed, and 17 other individuals drowned. A total of about 70 others were injured. The floods hit 7,754 houses in 339 neighborhoods and villages. Nearly 300 animals also lost their lives, and homes and infrastructure were damaged. The government has set aside $21.3 million for the affected people. Food relief is already being delivered to an estimated 4,000 households. Niger, like most other African countries, has major problems from climate change in the form of floods, heatwaves, droughts, and storms. The disasters are more regular and intense than before. In 2024, there was heavy rainfall affecting almost 1.5 million people in all eight regions of Niger.
The case highlights how the pressure on already vulnerable African nations is being compounded by climate change, and with fewer resources with which to manage it.
Pray for divine protection and provision for all the flood victims in Niger. Pray for them to have immediate access to food, shelter, and other basic needs (The Holy Bible, Lamentations 3:56).
Pray for the Nigerien government to take immediate action to improve the country’s infrastructure and water management to tackle climate change. Pray for the authorities to implement more effective measures to safeguard the safety of the citizens during deadly calamities (The Holy Bible, Psalm 33:20).
