On June 19, more than 200 armed men on motorbikes attacked a Niger army base in Banibangou, near the Mali border, killing at least 34 soldiers and injuring 14 others. Niger’s defense ministry called the attackers “mercenaries” and said troops killed dozens of them in return. The army is still searching for the attackers. This region, where Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso meet, often faces jihadist violence. The attack highlights growing security problems in Niger, where the military took power in 2023, claiming the former president failed to stop such attacks. Niger’s junta has since expelled French and U.S. forces and now works with Russia and Türkiye. Together with Mali and Burkina Faso, Niger allied to fight jihadists. Despite these efforts, deadly violence in the Sahel region continues, raising concerns about regional stability and safety.

Pray for wise counsel for the authorities of Niger and its neighboring countries in the fight against terrorism. Pray for the perpetrators behind the deadly attack on Niger army base to be brought to justice quickly (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 15:22).

Pray for divine protection upon all the people in the Sahel region from jihadist attacks. Pray for an improved security system in the fight against terrorism in the region (The Holy Bible, Psalm 17:8).
