In Iraq, over 600 pilgrims were briefly hospitalized after inhaling chlorine gas. The leak came from a water treatment station on the Karbala–Najaf road. The incident occurred overnight during the Arbaeen pilgrimage season. Iraq’s health ministry confirmed 621 cases of asphyxia from the chlorine leak. All affected individuals were given medical treatment. Thankfully, all patients were discharged in good health. Security forces confirmed the chlorine leak as the cause. The leak occurred near one of the busiest pilgrimage routes. The incident raised concerns about Iraq’s fragile infrastructure. Decades of conflict and corruption have weakened safety systems. Authorities admit that adherence to safety standards is often poor. The event follows a deadly fire in Kut in July that killed more than 60 people. The government faces renewed pressure to improve public safety measures.
Abba Father, we thank You for those who impacted by the chlorine leak have been restored to health. We ask You to continue protecting the pilgrims and keeping them safe throughout their journey. May they come to know that You alone are the true Savior who gave Your life for them (The Holy Bible, Psalm 121:7-8).
Lord, we pray for Iraq, a land burdened by conflict and corruption. Raise up leaders who value truth and justice, and rebuild broken systems to protect lives (The Holy Bible, Isaiah 58:12).
