China: China has perfected the art of internet policing, running one of the largest online censorship and surveillance systems in the world. With compulsory identity verification on all online platforms, it has become nearly impossible for users to remain anonymous. However, this tightly controlled online landscape is set to face even more stringent regulations with the rollout of a government-issued national internet ID. Rather than requiring individuals to provide their personal details for identity verification on each platform separately, the government aims to streamline the process by introducing a virtual ID that will enable users to log in across various social media applications and websites. Nonetheless, experts have raised concerns about the true voluntariness of this system and pointed out the risks of potential data breaches, as personal information is now being gathered in a centralized manner.

  • Lord, we pray for the protection of individuals’ privacy and personal freedoms in the face of increasing surveillance and control. We ask that You grant wisdom and discernment to leaders and policymakers, ensuring that the rights of individuals are upheld and respected (The Holy Bible, 2 Corinthians 3:17).
  • Lord, we ask for Your divine protection over citizens’ personal information as it is gathered and stored in centralized systems. May the data be safeguarded against breaches and misuse, and may those responsible for managing this information act with integrity and responsibility (The Holy Bible, Psalm 9:9)
