Brunei is working to grow its fishing industry as part of economic diversification. In 2023, fishing brought about 166.6 million Brunei dollars to the economy, mostly from catching wild fish. Commercial fishing grew a lot, with fish catch value rising from 12.16 million dollars in 2023 to 14.8 million dollars in 2024. Fish farming, called aquaculture, is also growing and is expected to earn 200 million dollars. To protect and improve fishing, Brunei supports projects like reef ball donations to fishermen. Reef balls help create better places for fish to live, increasing fish catches and supporting sustainable fishing. Youths join these projects to learn skills and care for the ocean’s future. These efforts show Brunei’s commitment to building a stronger, more varied economy by growing its fishing industry while protecting marine life.
