The National Council’s Good Governance Committee (GGC) raised serious concerns over the harmful use of alcohol in Bhutan during its 22nd session. Bhutan reportedly has the highest per capita alcohol consumption in the WHO South-East Asia region. Alcohol is a major contributor to health issues, including liver disease, and is also linked to domestic violence, youth delinquency, road accidents, and significant economic loss. The report points to systemic challenges such as weak law enforcement, social acceptance, and cultural factors. The GGC proposed consultations and field visits to develop stronger interventions, including revising existing alcohol regulations.

Abba Father, bring healing to those battling addiction. Help our leaders make wise decisions to protect lives and restore families. In Jesus’ name. Amen (The Holy Bible, Ephesians 5:18).

Lord, shine Your light in communities gripped by alcohol misuse. Strengthen families, heal wounds, and break chains of bondage (The Holy Bible, John 8:36).
