A deadly earthquake hit eastern Afghanistan on August 31, killing an estimated 2,200 and leveling more than 5,000 houses, with Kunar province worst affected. Whole villages were destroyed as mud and wood buildings crumbled, entombing villagers. Thousands of survivors are currently sheltering in improvised camps, exposed to cold and other conditions. Women experience additional difficulties because of Taliban travel restrictions and poor access to female medical personnel. Although there is some medical assistance available, the resources are limited. Foreign agencies and local citizens are offering critical help in the form of food, shelter, and medical attention. Survivors lost many relatives and are hesitant to go back to their ruined houses. They are demanding new land and long-term support. Families in the camps are struggling with grief, trauma, and uncertainty as winter approaches. Reconstruction is desperately required, but hope is tenuous among survivors who are still trying to cope with the tragedy. The future is uncertain for the thousands made homeless.

Father GOD, we ask for Your divine protection over all the lives affected by the earthquake in Afghanistan. LORD, comfort those who have lost their loved ones and heal those who are injured (The Holy Bible, Psalm 147:3).

Pray for divine provision of all basic needs and rights for all the earthquake victims, especially women and children. Pray for the LORD to bless them with hope and a bright future (The Holy Bible, Jeremiah 29:11).
