Rescue workers in northern Nigeria are searching for about 25 people still missing after a boat accident on 17 August 2025 in Sokoto State. The boat, carrying over 50 passengers to a local market, capsized in the River Goronyo. So far, 25 people have been found alive. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is working with local authorities to find the missing passengers. Boat accidents are common in Nigeria because of overcrowding, poor maintenance, and weak safety rules. In December 2024, 54 bodies were found after a boat carrying over 200 people sank in the River Niger. A month before that, nearly 200 people died when a canoe with 300 passengers sank. Two years ago, more than 100 people drowned in the southwest after a boat from Kwara to Niger state sank following a wedding. Though safety laws require life jackets, they are often missing in rural areas. Rescue efforts in Sokoto continue.
Pray for the Nigerian authorities to expedite the rescue operation of the missing victims of the boat accident. Pray for divine protection upon all the Nigerians from such accidents (The Holy Bible, Psalm 91:4).
Pray for the Nigerian lawmakers to implement more stringent measures to safeguard the safety of the people from boat accidents. Pray for improved maintenance and proper implementation of safety regulations in both rural and urban areas in Nigeria (The Holy Bible, Psalm 61:1).
