Pray For The Lao People

Pray for the Lao majority, particularly families living along the Mekong and in the country’s lowland communities. Ask God to awaken spiritual hunger among people whose lives have been shaped by Buddhist tradition and cultural expectations.

Show me Your ways, O Lord;
Teach me Your paths.

Psalm 25:4

Pray For Christian Believers Under Pressure

Pray for Christian Believers who must make difficult decisions about how openly they can practice their faith. Ask God to give them courage without recklessness, wisdom without fear, and a deep awareness of His presence.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 23:4

Pray For Christian Leaders

Pray for pastors, elders, evangelists, teachers, and house-church leaders throughout Laos. Many serve communities where resources and training can be limited. Ask God to deepen their knowledge of Scripture and give them patience as they disciple new Christian Believers.

See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise,

Ephesians 5:15

Pray For The Young Adults

Pray for students and young adults as they encounter new ideas while remaining connected to family and cultural traditions. Ask God to place faithful Christian mentors in their lives and to give them a desire for truth that leads them toward Christ.

Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, Before the difficult days come, And the years draw near when you say, “I have no pleasure in them”:

Ecclesiastes 12:1

Pray For A Spiritual Awakening

Pray for a movement of God that reaches beyond the established churches and touches communities where Christianity remains little known. Ask God to awaken people who are spiritually searching and to bring them into contact with faithful Christians and trustworthy Scripture. Pray for the Gospel to move through families, friendships, workplaces, schools, and communities.

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

Matthew 5:13

Pray For The Next Generation

Pray that young people will have opportunities to ask honest questions about God, identity, and purpose. Pray for Christian teachers and mentors who will listen before they speak. Pray for churches that will give young Christian Believers room to grow rather than simply expecting them to inherit the faith of older generations.

Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

1 Timothy 4:12

Region: Southeast Asia
Capital: Vientiane
Official Language: Lao
Other Languages: Numerous ethnic and regional languages
Religious Landscape: Predominantly Theravada Buddhist, with Christian, Muslim, Bahá’í, and Indigenous belief communities

Laos is one of mainland Southeast Asia’s most ethnically diverse countries. Government classifications recognize numerous ethnic groups, while different communities speak languages belonging to several major linguistic families.

Laos is a land without a coastline, yet water is central to its identity. The Mekong traces much of the country’s western boundary, while countless smaller rivers descend through mountains, valleys, and forested landscapes. Much of Laos is rugged and mountainous. Forests cover large portions of the country, while population centers are concentrated around river valleys and areas such as Vientiane and the Mekong corridor.

The country’s geography has shaped its communities for generations. Mountain ranges, rivers, and valleys have allowed distinctive cultures and languages to flourish in places that can remain physically difficult to reach.

Laos is home to a remarkable variety of people groups. The Lao form the largest ethnic community, while the Khmou, Hmong, Phouthay, Tai, Makong, Katang, Lue, and Akha are among the many other communities found across the country. Different ethnic groups have their own languages, traditions, and histories.

Communities are sometimes described by their traditional relationships with the lowlands, uplands, and mountains. Such distinctions reflect differences in geography, livelihoods, languages, and cultural histories. For many communities, spiritual life is also deeply connected with family, ancestors, village traditions, and the natural world.

Theravada Buddhism has profoundly shaped Lao society, particularly among the ethnic Lao of the lowlands. Buddhist temples remain important places within many communities, while traditional beliefs concerning spirits and ancestors continue to influence religious life, especially in rural areas.

The spiritual landscape is therefore more complex than a simple Buddhist label suggests. In many places, Buddhist practice exists alongside older traditions and beliefs.

Christianity remains a small minority religion. According to the most recent national census figures cited in religious-demography reporting, Christians represented about 1.7% of the population, while roughly 31% reported having no religion, a category that can include people whose beliefs are connected with animist traditions.

Pray for the people living in those distant valleys and mountain communities. Pray that geographical isolation will never become spiritual isolation.

Pray for a Christian witness that understands these realities rather than treating every community as though it were culturally identical.

Pray for people to encounter the Gospel in ways that address their deepest questions about God, spiritual powers, guilt, death, forgiveness, and hope.

Laos has Christian communities, churches, and Christian Believers who have faithfully followed Jesus through difficult circumstances. The presence of Christianity, however, does not mean that every community has heard the Gospel clearly.

The challenge is especially significant among ethnic communities in remote areas. Some villages have limited access to Christian teaching, while language differences can make Scripture and discipleship more difficult to communicate.

Christian communities have also reported restrictions and pressure in some rural areas. Reports have documented pressure on some Christian families to renounce their faith, difficulties surrounding worship and registration, and restrictions on religious activity.

Pray for Christians who worship quietly. Pray for families who face pressure because of their faith. Pray for communities where the name of Jesus remains unfamiliar.

Prayer for The Lowlands To The Mountains

Pray for a movement of discipleship that grows naturally within Lao communities rather than remaining dependent upon outside structures.

Pray for Christian Believers to make disciples who make disciples themselves.

And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

2 Timothy 2:2

Pray For Those Who Have Never Heard

Pray for Christian workers who understand local culture. Pray for Lao Christian Believers who can carry the Gospel into their own communities. Pray for Scripture resources that can cross linguistic barriers.

Pray for the first conversation. Pray for the first Scripture. Pray for the first person in a family to ask what Jesus means.

And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written:

“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Gospel of peace,
Who bring glad tidings of good things!”

Romans 10:15

Pray For The Southern Provinces

Pray for churches to become trusted members of their communities. Ask God to strengthen relationships between Christians and their neighbors and to give local leaders wisdom when disputes arise.

Blessed are the peacemakers,
For they shall be called sons of God.

Matthew 5:9

Pray For The Forests

Pray for communities whose lives are connected to the land. Pray for wise stewardship and sustainable livelihoods. Pray for Indigenous communities facing pressure on their land and resources, particularly those already experiencing disadvantages in education, healthcare, and access to basic services.

The trees of the Lord are full of sap,
The cedars of Lebanon which He planted,

Psalm 104:16

Pray For The Mekong

Pray for families whose livelihoods depend upon the river. Pray for responsible stewardship of water and natural resources. Pray for Christian communities living along the Mekong to become places of hospitality, service, and spiritual life.

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

Matthew 5:13

Pray For Luang Prabang

Pray for the people who live and work there, not simply for those who visit. Pray for Christians who serve quietly among local families, students, and workers. Ask God to give Christian Believers wisdom in a setting where religious tradition is deeply visible.

For the earth will be filled
With the knowledge of the glory of the Lord,
As the waters cover the sea.

Habakkuk 2:14

Pray For Vientiane

Pray for the churches of Vientiane to become communities of deep discipleship. Pray for Christian professionals to demonstrate integrity in their workplaces and for students to encounter Christian Believers who can answer their questions thoughtfully.

The wise in heart will be called prudent,
And sweetness of the lips increases learning.

Proverbs 16:21

Pray For The Khmou

Ask God to raise up Christian Believers who understand the Khmou language and culture and can naturally communicate the Gospel within their communities.

The entrance of Your words gives light;
It gives understanding to the simple.

Psalm 119:130

Pray For The Hmong

Ask God to raise Hmong Christian leaders who can disciple Christian Believers deeply and serve their communities with humility.

The entrance of Your words gives light;
It gives understanding to the simple.

Jeremiah 3:15

Pray For Scripture In Every Language

Laos’s linguistic diversity presents both an opportunity and a challenge for Christian discipleship. Pray for translators, teachers, writers, and local Christian Believers who can make biblical truth accessible in the languages people understand most deeply.

Ask God to raise a generation of Christian communicators from within Laos’s many communities.

Your testimonies also are my delight
And my counselors.

Psalm 119:24

Heavenly Father,

You know every mountain, river, and village of Laos. You know the Mekong communities, the streets of Vientiane, the temples of Luang Prabang, and the remote settlements hidden among the forests. You know every ethnic community and every language. You know the Lao, Khmou, Hmong, Akha, Lue, Phouthay, Katang, and the many other peoples who call this land home. You know those who have heard about Jesus and those who have never clearly encountered the Gospel.

Strengthen the Church in Laos. Give pastors wisdom, give teachers patience, and give young Christian Believers courage. Protect Christian families who face pressure because of their faith. Give local churches grace to respond to opposition without bitterness.

Raise up Lao Christian leaders from every generation and every community. Give them Scripture in the languages people understand most deeply. Open doors for discipleship among people living in remote mountains and villages. Bring healing to communities divided by religious tensions. Give wisdom to local authorities and protection to vulnerable families. Let Christians be known for integrity, humility, compassion, and genuine service.

Father, awaken spiritual hunger throughout Laos. When people inherit religious traditions without knowing the living Christ, this draws them toward truth. Where Christians have grown weary, renew them. Where churches are small, strengthen them. Where communities have never heard, open a door.

May the Gospel travel along the Mekong, through the mountains, across the valleys, and into homes where the name of Jesus has never been truly understood.

In the Name of Jesus Christ,
Amen.
