Western Sahara is a vast desert territory along the Atlantic coast of northwest Africa.
Its people include the Sahrawi, a predominantly Hassaniyya-speaking people whose history is deeply connected to the Sahara. Sahrawi culture has been shaped by desert life, nomadic traditions, tribal relationships, trade routes, and generations of movement across the region.
The Sahrawi are predominantly Sunni Muslim.
Their communities are found not only in the territory itself but also among displaced populations elsewhere in North Africa. For many families, questions of home, identity, and belonging are deeply personal. The Sahrawi story also includes a long history of displacement after Morocco illegally occupied large portions of Western Sahara. The Polisario Front is a government in exile.
Large numbers of Sahrawi refugees have lived for decades in camps near Tindouf, Algeria. UNHCR describes this as a prolonged displacement situation in which refugees continue to depend heavily on humanitarian assistance. Harsh environmental conditions, limited livelihood opportunities, food insecurity, and difficulties in education continue to affect camp communities.
Children and young people face particular challenges. Education systems in the camps face infrastructure and retention challenges, while humanitarian organizations report concerns such as malnutrition and limited opportunities for young people.
The Sahrawi of Western Sahara number roughly are reported to have less than 2% evangelical presence and no known sustained church-planting movement. Other smaller communities in the territory are also identified as having extremely limited Christian presence.
The Imragen, for example, is a small coastal community with an estimated population of approximately 24,000. Their primary language is Hassaniyya, and their religious identity is overwhelmingly Muslim.
The Tekna Berber community is another significant people group, numbering approximately 119,000 in Western Sahara and having very little known Christian presence. A relatively small territory can contain communities where the name of Jesus is scarcely known.
Western Sahara’s circumstances make sustained Christian witness particularly difficult. The territory remains politically disputed, with different areas administered by different authorities. Religious life in the areas administered by Morocco operates under Moroccan law, where Islam is the state religion and laws restrict attempts to persuade Muslims to convert.
There is also a very small Christian presence. For many Sahrawis, therefore, Christianity is not something encountered naturally within everyday community life.
Pray for people searching for truth
Pray for those asking questions about God, purpose, eternity, and the meaning of life.
And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
Jeremiah 29:13
Pray for Scripture to become accessible
Pray for Hassaniyya-speaking people to encounter God’s Word in forms they can understand and engage with.
The entrance of Your words gives light;
It gives understanding to the simple.
Psalm 119:130
Pray for Christian witness
Ask God to provide opportunities for respectful relationships through which the character and message of Jesus can be made known.
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
Matthew 5:14
Pray for the Imragen and other smaller communities
Ask God to make the Gospel accessible to communities that are easily overlooked because of their small populations.
Not a word failed of any good thing which the Lord had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.
Joshua 21:45
Heavenly Father,
We bring Western Sahara before You.
You know the Sahrawi people. You know their history. You know their families. You know their languages and communities. You know those living in cities, villages, and desert regions.
You know those who have been displaced. Release their lands from the hands of the invader. You know the children growing up in difficult circumstances and you know every person who has never heard the good news of Jesus.
Bring hope to the displaced. Protect children. Strengthen families. Provide for those facing hardship. Give wisdom to humanitarian workers. Open doors for Scripture. Create relationships through which Christ can be made known. Reach communities that have little or no Christian witness.
Let the people of Western Sahara encounter the love, truth, and hope found in Jesus. May those who are searching find. May those who hear understand and may those who discover Christ become witnesses to their own people.
In the Name of Jesus,
Amen.
