A report by the United Nations Human Rights Office reveals widespread abuse in cybercrime scam operations across Southeast Asia. Based on testimonies from 19 survivors, victims were trafficked into fortified compounds in countries including Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, and the UAE, where they faced torture, sexual abuse, food deprivation, debt bondage, and coercion into online fraud. The report estimates at least 300,000 people from 66 countries may be involved, with the Mekong region as the epicenter. UN High Commissioner Volker Türk called the abuses “staggering” and urged urgent human rights–centered action, stronger prevention, anti-corruption efforts, prosecution of syndicates, and better protection for survivors.

Abba Father, we lift up those who have suffered abuse, coercion, and violence. Restore their dignity, heal their wounds, and bring them into safety and freedom. Lord, bring restoration to survivors. Provide support, community, and new beginnings filled with purpose and peace. Amen (The Holy Bible, Isaiah 61:1).

Righteous God, expose corruption and dismantle systems of exploitation. Strengthen authorities to prosecute wrongdoing and defend the vulnerable. Amen (The Holy Bible, Isaiah 1:17).
