In Brunei, freedom of the press is heavily restricted by law and the exercise of emergency powers. The constitution does not guarantee freedom of speech, and criticizing the royal family or the national philosophy, known as the Malay Islamic Monarchy, is illegal. The Sharia Penal Code punishes apostasy, insulting Islam, or claiming to be God, with some crimes carrying the death penalty. Public celebrations of non-Islamic religions, such as Christmas, are limited, and Chinese New Year performances must remain within community areas. All public entertainment and performances require approval from a censorship board, and some films are banned. Newspapers must have government licenses, hire approved staff, and cannot publish anything deemed seditious. Television and radio programs are censored, especially for religious content. Local media often rely on international wire stories for coverage of sensitive topics. Journalists face fines or imprisonment for publishing “false or malicious” reports and often practice self-censorship due to legal, social, and professional pressures. Monitoring by authorities has increased, further limiting media freedom.
Pray for the immediate and unconditional release of the longest-detained journalists and other imprisoned activists in Brunei. Pray for more press freedom and freedom of expression in the country (The Holy Bible, Psalm 12:5).
Most High GOD, who rules in the kingdom of men, we plead for Your intervention against the oppressive regime in Brunei. Open the eyes and hearts of the ruler and the authorities of the nation to submit themselves and their works under Your reign (The Holy Bible, Daniel 5:21).
