Tensions are rising again between Eritrea and Ethiopia, raising fears of another war in the Horn of Africa. The two countries have a long and troubled history. Eritrea became independent from Ethiopia in 1993, but it later fought a deadly border war. In 2019, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed made peace with Eritrea and even won the Nobel Peace Prize. However, relations have worsened again. During the Tigray war, Eritrea supported Ethiopia’s government against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. Now Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of backing Tigrayan fighters and stirring unrest in northern Ethiopia. There is also tension over access to the Red Sea, as landlocked Ethiopia wants to secure a port, including Eritrea’s Assab. Troop movements and strong words from leaders have increased fears. Many people worry that if fighting starts again, it could destroy lives, damage the region’s fragile economy, and destabilize neighboring countries.
Pray for the authorities of Eritrea and Ethiopia to uphold the peace agreements between them. Pray for lasting peace and friendly relations between the two countries (The Holy Bible, Matthew 5:9).
Pray for the LORD’s protection over the innocent lives caught in the ongoing conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia. Pray for the LORD to bless the people facing uncertainty with hope and a future (The Holy Bible, Jeremiah 29:11).
