Farmers and herders are clashing more frequently in most places across Nigeria. It is not solely a matter of religion but largely one of land and survival. Farmers require land to plant crops, while herders require room for their livestock to graze. As the land dries up and becomes overpopulated, less space remains for both. People get angry and fearful about it. When livestock destroy crops or occupy farmland, conflicts may arise. At times, these battles turn fatal. The climate has also altered, with fewer rains and warmer days, making it more difficult to locate good land. In certain areas, there are no influential leaders to assist in resolving such issues, and thus, violence increases. Armed groups usually enter the fray and worsen the situation. Whereas the individuals involved are of different religious beliefs, the true reasons are poverty, global warming, and poor government support. To correct this, Nigeria requires improved security, honest reporting, and assistance for all of its people, regardless of their beliefs or origin.
Pray for wise counsel for the Nigerian authorities to improve the security system across the nation. Pray for them to come up with creative ways to end the conflict between farmers and herders in the country (The Holy Bible, Deuteronomy 16:19).
O LORD, our Father, we plead for Your Love to supernaturally fill the hearts of the farmers and herders in Nigeria. We pray that they dwell together in peace in their homeland (The Holy Bible, Jeremiah 31:24).
