In January, Niger’s capital, Niamey, was attacked by about 30 fighters from Islamic State-Sahel. They used drones, guns, and mortars to target Dori Hamani International Airport and military Air Base 101. The base is important because it runs Niger’s military drones and hosts the headquarters of the Alliance of Sahel States, which includes Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. All attackers were killed or captured, but the attack showed that terrorists remain a serious threat in Niger. These groups want to weaken the government and test security forces. Niger faces many dangers because it is surrounded by unstable countries in the Sahel. The government and army are working hard to protect the country, but attacks like this make daily life unsafe for civilians. Airports, military bases, and public areas can be targets. Security experts warn that without stronger defenses, Niger may continue to face frequent attacks from extremist groups.
Pray for the success of the Sahel states’ authorities in combating terrorism. Pray for the heightened security system in Niger and in the region. Pray for peace and justice to prevail in Niger and its neighboring countries (The Holy Bible, Psalm 7:10).
Pray against all the terrorist groups working in Niger. Pray for the LORD to cut the cords of funding of the jihadist fighters in the nation. Pray for the LORD to thwart all their plans against the peace in the country (The Holy Bible, Psalm 129:4).
