In Morocco, young people have taken to the streets to protest against the government’s focus on building massive football stadiums for the 2030 World Cup while basic needs like healthcare and education are being ignored. Many feel the five billion dollars being spent on football could be used to fix hospitals, schools, and public services. The protests began after the death of eight women in a poorly equipped hospital and have grown quickly through social media. Demonstrators say they want free quality education, good healthcare, better housing and jobs, and for English to replace French in schools. Though the protests are mostly peaceful, police have responded with arrests and some violence, leading to several injuries and three protester deaths. The group behind the movement, Gen Z 212, is not political and has no leader. Protesters like Hajar Belhassan say they love football but want their country to care for its people first. They want dignity, not just stadiums and promises.
Pray for the Moroccan government to invite the protestors to peace talks. Pray for the perpetrators behind the attacks on protestors to be brought to justice soon (The Holy Bible, Psalm 103:6).
Pray for quality education for all children in Morocco. Pray for improved healthcare and other public services in the nation. Pray for justice and peace to prevail in the country. (The Holy Bible, Psalm 72:4).
