The city of El-Fasher in Sudan’s Darfur region has fallen to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, fueling fears of mass killings and ethnic violence. Reports from the UN, witness accounts, and satellite imagery show civilians being executed, homes and hospitals destroyed, and many families trapped or separated. Thousands have fled, while others cannot reach safety. Human rights groups said the conflict between the RSF and the army amounts to a continuation of the genocide in Darfur as the RSF, formed from the Janjaweed militias, targets non-Arab groups like the Zaghawa. Survivors recounted men being separated and shot, while satellite images indicated possible mass graves. The leader of RSF, Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, acknowledged “violations” and promised investigations, but similar pledges were made on earlier occasions and never fulfilled. Violence has been condemned by the international community, which includes the UN, the African Union, and the EU, and urged for civilians’ protection. Activists warn this tragedy could mirror the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, in which more than 8,000 people were killed.
Almighty LORD, we plead for Your divine intervention in Sudan against the ‘war for power’ in the country. Father, it is nothing for You to help those innocent civilians facing uncertainty and slaughter. Do not let the evil men prevail against these innocent civilians, Oh LORD! (The Holy Bible, 2 Chronicles 14:11).
Sovereign LORD, for the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the crying civilians in Sudan, now arise, oh LORD, and set these innocent people in the peace and safety for which they yearn (The Holy Bible, Psalm 12:5).
