President Salva Kiir of South Sudan has again replaced the head of the military, recalling Dau Aturjong and recalling Paul Nang Majok, who was himself recently dismissed only three months ago. The abrupt change was made on state television without justification. Kiir, in power since the nation became independent in 2011, is still replacing individuals in influential positions as he navigates endemic conflict and speculation about who will succeed him. His political opponent, Riek Machar, is currently on trial for severe offenses, including treason and murder, after being charged with supporting a militia group that recently fought the army. These actions have created concerns that the peace agreement signed in 2018 may collapse. The common view is that Kiir replaces military and government officials to maintain power and balance among groups. United Nations experts, meanwhile, indicate leaders in the country have been looting public resources while citizens endure poverty and suffering.
Pray for political stability in South Sudan. Pray for the ruling authorities to uphold the peace deal signed in 2018 and work towards the peace and welfare of the people in the country (The Holy Bible, Psalm 82:3).
Pray against corruption in South Sudan. Pray that the authorities behind the stealing of public resources are quickly brought to justice. Pray for justice to be served for the South Sudanese people who are facing poverty and hardship (The Holy Bible, Amos 5:11-14).
