The kafala system in Lebanon is a sponsorship system that controls migrant workers, especially domestic workers. Under this system, a worker’s legal status depends entirely on their employer. Workers cannot change jobs or leave the country without the employer’s permission. Many employers take advantage of this power by withholding wages, keeping passports, or forcing workers to work long hours without rest. If a worker tries to escape or complains, they can lose their legal status and risk detention or deportation. The system also makes workers vulnerable to abuse, including physical and sexual exploitation. Recruitment agencies profit from sending workers to Lebanon, often charging high fees that leave them in debt. Women from South Asia and the Philippines are most affected. Even if workers face danger, they often have limited rights and receive little support from authorities. Human rights groups have repeatedly called for reform, arguing that the system is unfair and puts workers at risk. Many continue to work under it because they have no other choice.
Pray against the Kafala system, which exploits the rights and freedom of migrant workers, especially women migrant workers, in Lebanon. Pray for the Lebanese government to implement reforms to end the violence against migrant workers in the country (The Holy Bible, Deuteronomy 1:17).
Pray for migrant workers, especially women domestic workers, suffering abuse and violence in Lebanon. Pray for them to have access to all rights and freedoms. Pray for divine protection upon them. (The Holy Bible, Jeremiah 51:36).
