The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for an attack on the international airport and nearby air force base in Niamey, the capital of Niger. The attack happened after midnight and involved militants riding motorcycles. They used heavy weapons and drones in what they described as a sudden and well-planned strike. Several explosions and gunfire were reported at the airport, which is close to the presidential palace and a military base. At least three planes were damaged, including one from Air Côte d’Ivoire and two from the Togolese airline Asky. Airline staff were not at the airport during the attack and were reported safe. Niger’s security forces said they quickly pushed back the attackers, killing 20 militants and arresting 11 others. The country has been ruled by a military junta since a coup in 2023. The government often blames foreign countries for insecurity. The attack shows ongoing threats from jihadist groups in the Sahel region.

Pray for the LORD’s intervention in Niger against the Jihadist groups in the country and in the Sahel region. Pray for divine protection upon all the vulnerable people from violence and evildoers (The Holy Bible, Psalm 18:48).

Pray for the authorities in Niger to take immediate action against the armed groups threatening the civilians. Pray for an improved security system in the country against extremism (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 12:6).

Pray against all the terrorist groups working in Niger and in the Sahel region. Pray for the LORD to cut the cords of funding of the jihadist fighters in the region. Pray for the LORD to thwart all their plans against the peace in the region (The Holy Bible, Psalm 129:4).
