Iranian authorities have sentenced Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi to a total of six years in prison for “gathering and collusion to commit a crime,” according to her lawyer. She also received an additional one-and-a-half-year sentence for propaganda-related activities, along with a two-year travel ban and two years of internal exile to the city of Khosf in South Khorasan province. Mohammadi’s lawyer, Mostafa Nili, said the verdict is not final and can be appealed, and expressed hope that her client may be temporarily released on bail for medical treatment due to ongoing health concerns. Under Iranian law, prison sentences are served concurrently. Iran continues to face international criticism over its human rights record, particularly its use of executions, with Amnesty International reporting that the country carries out more executions annually than any nation except China.

Abba Father, we lift up Narges Mohammadi and all prisoners of conscience. Grant her strength, healing, and endurance amid suffering. Lord, protect all who are punished for speaking truth and defending human dignity. Surround them with hope and courage. Amen (The Holy Bible, Psalm 34:18).

God of justice, let truth prevail over oppression. May courts uphold fairness, and may righteousness guide every judgment. Amen (The Holy Bible, Psalm 33:5).
