Gebremedhin Gebregergis, an Eritrean Orthodox priest, has been imprisoned for more than twenty years in Eritrea without any charge or trial. He was arrested on 19 November 2004 together with two other Christians. Since then, they have been held at the Central Criminal Investigation Centre in Wengel Mermera, a prison known for harsh conditions. Reports say that the priest was involved in the Medhane Alem Bible Study Group, a religious movement that authorities have suppressed. Before his arrest, Gebregergis was known as a humble and dedicated church leader who taught young people as the head of a Sunday school. He is also a father of six children. His wife sadly passed away in 2022 while he was still in prison. Human rights advocates are now calling for his release and urging people to send letters to Isaias Afwerki, the long-time leader of Eritrea, who has ruled the country since 1993. Religious groups in Eritrea are allowed to exist but are closely monitored by the government.
Pray against the repressive regime in Eritrea. Pray for the Holy Spirit of GOD to turn the hearts and minds of the Eritrean authorities towards Truth, justice, and righteousness (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 21:1).
Pray for religious freedom in Eritrea. Pray for divine protection upon all the Christians in the country. Pray for the immediate release of all the imprisoned Eritrean believers, including Gebremedhin Gebregergis and two other believers who have been in prison for two decades (The Holy Bible, Psalm 119:116).
