Migrants from Eritrea often leave their country to escape poverty, repression, and endless military service. Many hope to reach Europe for safety and a better life, but their journey is extremely dangerous. A recent case in the Netherlands showed how badly Eritrean migrants can be abused. A Dutch court sentenced an Eritrean man, Amanuel Walid, to 20 years in prison for running a cruel human trafficking network. Migrants were taken from Eritrea through Libya, where they were locked in dirty, overcrowded camps. They were beaten, starved, and tortured while traffickers called their families and demanded money. Families were forced to pay large sums to stop the abuse. Even after payment, migrants were put on unsafe boats to cross the Mediterranean Sea, where many drowned. The court said Walid showed no humanity and no remorse. This case highlights the terrible suffering Eritrean migrants face and how criminal gangs exploit their hope for freedom and dignity.
Pray for the LORD’s love, comfort, healing, and strength to cover and heal all human trafficking victims of Eritrea who have suffered violence and ill-treatment. Pray for the LORD to bless them with hope and a bright future (The Holy Bible, Jeremiah 29:11).
Pray for the effective enforcement of the laws to eradicate human trafficking and dismantle trafficking networks in Eritrea and its neighboring countries. Pray for the evildoers behind the trafficking wings to be brought to justice. Pray for the end of the oppressive regime in Eritrea. Pray for divine protection and wise counsel to shield all the vulnerable from exploitation (The Holy Bible, 2 Samuel 22:31).
