Heavy rain and snowfall in Afghanistan ended a long dry spell but caused sudden floods in many areas. Officials report that at least 17 people died and 11 were injured. In Herat province, five members of one family were killed when their home’s roof collapsed; this included two children. Flooding damaged roads, homes, and farms in central, northern, southern, and western regions. Many families lost livestock, and about 1,800 households were impacted. The disaster agency sent teams to assess the damage and plan assistance. Afghanistan is vulnerable to extreme weather and frequent floods after seasonal rain. Years of conflict, poor infrastructure, and deforestation worsen the damage, especially in areas where homes are made of mud. Climate change is increasing these risks. The United Nations warns that the crisis will continue and has launched a $1.7 billion appeal to support nearly 18 million people in need in the country.
Pray for divine protection upon all the people in Afghanistan from the climate challenges. Pray for the immediate provision of emergency care and other basic needs and rights for them (The Holy Bible, Psalm 132:15).
Pray for the restoration of lives and livelihoods in Afghanistan following the heavy rains and floods (The Holy Bible, Psalm 65:9).
