Pray for the Church in Djibouti

Djibouti’s Church is small and vulnerable. Pray for Christian Believers to grow in faith, holiness, and love, and for those who follow Jesus Christ with very few others around them.

Father, strengthen Your little flock in Djibouti. Keep them faithful, encourage them in fellowship, and let them shine where there are so few to stand beside them.

Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

Luke 12:32

Pray for workers among the Somali and Afar

Pray for Christian Believers willing to serve among the Somali and Afar, in Djibouti and across the Horn of Africa, and for wisdom, patience, and courage for the few workers already there.

Lord of the harvest, send workers to Djibouti. Uphold those who serve, and give them patience for the long work of friendship and witness.

Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.

Isaiah 41:10

Pray for Christian Believers passing through

Soldiers, sailors, aid workers, and traders from around the world pass through Djibouti. Pray that the Christian Believers among them would live and speak as faithful witnesses of Jesus Christ.

Lord, let every Christian Believer who passes through Djibouti walk wisely, love generously, and make the most of every opportunity You give.

Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.

Colossians 4:5

Pray for those who cross the water

Fighting in Yemen escalated sharply in September 2026, sending thousands of people fleeing across the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait to Djibouti’s northern shores. Pray for refugees and migrants arriving in need, and for those who receive them.

Father, protect those who flee across the sea. Provide shelter, food, and safety, and let them meet the compassion of Jesus Christ in the people who welcome them.

The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore.

Djibouti is a small, sun-scorched nation on the Horn of Africa, bordered by Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Somalia at the mouth of the Red Sea. The world knows it mainly for its ports and its many foreign military bases, but Djibouti is first of all a nation of people, and one of the least reached in the region.

Two peoples make up most of the country.

Somali (Issa)

Estimated at around 674,000, the largest community in Djibouti, and part of a wider Somali people living across Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya.

Afar

Roughly 383,000, classified as frontier: a people with virtually no Christian presence of their own. The Afar homeland stretches across Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Eritrea.

Though small, Djibouti is layered with language. Somali and Afar are spoken in homes and markets, while Arabic and French serve as the languages of government, trade, and school.

Djibouti’s position has grown more precarious. As the main trade route for landlocked Ethiopia, the country feels every tremor in the Red Sea, and its ports, bases, and migrant routes keep it at the center of regional pressures.

Of Djibouti’s 7 people groups, 5 are unreached and 2 are frontier, communities with almost no followers of Jesus Christ and no known movement toward Him. More than 95% of the population lives within people groups classified as unreached.

For most Djiboutians, faith and identity are inseparable. To be Somali or Afar is, for most families, to be Muslim, and there are very few followers of Jesus Christ within their own families and clans.

Language is another barrier. A witness in French or Arabic may still leave a person untouched in the language of the heart. The Somali and Afar peoples both need clear Scripture, audio resources, and witnesses who can speak into their own culture.

Reaching these peoples in Djibouti is also part of a much larger task. Both stretch far beyond its borders into countries where they have had little meaningful opportunity to hear the Gospel.

Pray for the Somali and Afar peoples

Pray for the Somali and Afar of Djibouti, among whom there are very few followers of Jesus Christ, that God would prepare hearts, open doors, and raise up witnesses within each community.

Father, You have promised Your Son the nations. Let the Somali and the Afar be counted among His inheritance.

Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession.

Psalm 2:8

Pray for a movement of God

Djibouti’s need is far greater than human effort alone can meet. Pray for a movement of God among the Somali and Afar, and for whole families and clans to turn to Jesus Christ.

Lord, do what no human effort can do. Draw whole households to the light of Jesus Christ.

The Gentiles shall come to your light, And kings to the brightness of your rising.

Isaiah 60:3

Pray for Scripture in Somali and Afar

Pray for clear Scripture and audio resources in Somali and Afar, and for local Christian Believers who can carry God’s Word into homes in the languages people truly understand.

Lord, let Your Word be heard in Somali and Afar homes, and let faith grow wherever it is heard.

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Romans 10:17

Pray for the next generation

Djibouti has a young population, many of them searching for work and hope. Pray that they would encounter Jesus Christ, and that a new generation of local Christian Believers would rise to reach their own people.

Father, meet Djibouti’s young people. Raise up young Christian Believers whose lives point their friends and families to You.

Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

1 Timothy 4:12

Heavenly Father,

We bring Djibouti before You, a small nation where Africa meets Arabia and the shipping lanes of the world pass by. You know the Somali and the Afar. You know every port worker and herder, every family in Djibouti City, every refugee arriving on the northern shore, and every person who has never heard the Gospel.

Strengthen Your small Church, and protect Christian Believers who follow Jesus Christ at a cost. Send workers who will learn Somali and Afar and stay for the long work of love. Let Your Word be heard in the languages of the heart, and make faithful witnesses of the many Christian Believers who pass through this land.

Turn this crossroads into a meeting place with Jesus Christ. Draw young people to Him, and let whole families and clans find life in His name, until Djibouti becomes a testimony of Your grace among the nations.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
