Pray For Scripture Engagement

Albanians have the Bible in their own language, but many have never read it. Pray that the Word of God would be opened, taught, and believed, and that God’s Spirit would bring it to life in Albanian hearts.

For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations.

Psalm 100:5

Pray For The Next Generation

Many of Albania’s young people are leaving the country, and many more are searching for meaning. Pray that this generation would find hope in Jesus Christ, and that God would raise up young Albanian Christian Believers to lead and to stay.

He raises the poor out of the dust, And lifts the needy out of the ash heap,

Psalm 113:7

Pray For The Church

Pray for Albania’s small evangelical Church to grow strong, healthy, and deeply rooted in its relationship with Jesus Christ and Scripture, and for churches that reach beyond their own walls into their communities.

Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass.

Psalm 37:5

Albania is a mountainous nation on the Adriatic coast of southeastern Europe. It is one of the least-evangelized countries in Europe, shaped by a unique history. For decades it was under communist rule, officially declared an atheist state, and all religious practice was banned. Religious freedom returned in 1990, and today Albanians worship openly across several traditions – yet a living, personal faith in Jesus Christ is still rare.

Albania has approximately 10 people groups, of which 2 are classified as unreached. The largest, the Albanian people themselves, are considered only minimally reached – a community where many identify with a religious tradition, but very few are followers of Jesus Christ.

Albania’s spiritual landscape is unusual. Most Albanians identify culturally as Muslim, including the mystical Bektashi order, whose world center is in the capital, Tirana, while sizable communities identify as Orthodox or Catholic. Yet a very large share of the population is secular or non-practicing, and evangelical Christian Believers make up well under one percent.

The Albanian people, numbering more than 2.2 million in the country, are the great spiritual need here.

Their challenge is not open hostility but distance. Religion here is largely inherited rather than lived: a label on a census form, a family tradition, a set of holidays. Surveys suggest most Albanians who claim a faith do not actively practice it. The name of Jesus Christ is familiar, but a personal relationship with Him is not.

Albania is changing quickly. The country is pursuing membership in the European Union and modernizing fast, while emigration continues to drain its young people – the population has fallen by roughly 400,000 since 2011, and the 2023 census recorded the sharpest shift in religious identity in generations. Public life is intentionally secular, and spiritual questions are easily crowded out.

A Nation Of Many Languages

Albania is more united by language than many nations, with Albanian spoken across the country in its Gheg and Tosk forms. Scripture and the JESUS film are both available in Albanian, and literacy is high.

This is a gift and an opportunity. Where the Word of God can be read and understood, let us pray that it will be preached, believed, and lived, and not left on a shelf as a cultural artifact.

Pray especially for Scripture engagement, discipleship resources, sound Bible teaching, and Albanian Christian Believers who can share a living faith with their neighbors.

Pray For The Unreached

Pray for the Albanian people, many of whom identify with a faith tradition but have never personally encountered Jesus Christ, that God would stir spiritual hunger and turn cultural belief into living faith.

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold
In settings of silver.

Proverbs 25:11

Pray For Workers

Pray for Albanian Christian Believers and for workers who serve alongside them, so they can share the Gospel across the country, and for perseverance in a culture where faith is easily set aside.

The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in. From this time forth, and even forevermore.

Psalm 121:8

Pray For The Impossible

Albania’s need is far greater than human effort alone can meet. Pray for a movement of God that turns a secular, nominal nation into a people alive in Jesus Christ, and for whole communities to encounter Jesus Christ.

The wilderness and the wasteland shall be glad for them, And the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the rose;

Isaiah 35:1

Pray For Spiritual Awakening

Pray against the spiritual apathy left by generations of enforced atheism and modern secularism, and for a genuine awakening across Albania where nominal faith gives way to a living relationship with Jesus Christ.

And now for a little while grace has been shown from the Lord our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a peg in His holy place, that our God may enlighten our eyes and give us a measure of revival in our bondage.

Ezra 9:8

Sovereign Lord,

We pray for Albania – a nation once forced into atheism, now free, yet still waiting to know You in truth. You know every people group by name. You know every city, every mountain village, every family, and every person who has never truly heard the Gospel.

Raise up Albanian Christian Believers and workers from around the world. Give Your Church courage to speak into a secular and indifferent world. Open Your Word in Albanian hearts. Turn cultural belief into living faith, and breathe new life where there has been spiritual death. Move among Albania’s young people, and hold them close even as many leave home, so that they will carry the Gospel wherever they go.

And Lord, for those who have never truly heard – send someone. Let the name of Jesus Christ be known in every community. Let churches be planted and strengthened. Let disciples multiply where Jesus Christ is barely known. And let Albania become a testimony of Your grace among the nations.

Amen.
