Benin is a West African nation stretching from the Gulf of Guinea northward into the Sahel.

Its people represent a remarkable mixture of languages, cultures, and religious traditions. French is the official language, while numerous African languages are spoken throughout the country.

Christianity has a substantial presence, particularly in southern Benin. Islam is also significant, especially in northern communities. Indigenous religious traditions remain deeply woven into the cultural life of many families, and religious identities can sometimes overlap rather than fit neatly into separate categories.

Among Benin’s peoples are the Fon, Aja, Yoruba, Bariba, Dendi, Fulani, Ottamari, and Gbe-speaking peoples, as well as many smaller communities.

62 people groups in Benin, with 11 classified as unreached. These communities represent approximately 2.75 million people, while four groups are classified as unreached frontier peoples.

Among the communities requiring particular prayer are smaller peoples whose Christian presence remains limited. The Foodo, for example, number approximately 38,000 people in Benin and are predominantly Muslim, with very little evangelical presence. Other communities combine traditional religious practices with Christianity or Islam, creating a complex spiritual landscape.

Benin’s religious environment is comparatively open. Its constitution establishes a secular state and provides for freedom of religious thought, expression, and practice. Religious communities are required to register, and authorities may intervene when religious activities are considered to threaten public order.

The greater challenge for many unreached communities is therefore not necessarily a legal prohibition against Christianity.

It can be distance, language, poverty, isolation, cultural barriers, and lack of sustained Christian witness.

Northern Benin, in particular, faces increasing insecurity linked to the wider Sahel crisis. This has affected communities that already experience poverty and limited access to basic services.

When communities are struggling simply to survive, questions of faith can become intertwined with questions of food, safety, education, employment, and the future.

This is why Christian witness in Benin must involve both proclaiming Christ and demonstrating His compassion.

Pray for the unreached communities

Ask God to open doors for the Gospel among communities where Christian witness remains limited.

Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.

Matthew 9:37

Pray for people searching for God

Pray for people who are asking questions about truth, eternity, and the purpose of life.

You turn man to destruction,
And say, “Return, O children of men.”

Psalm 90:3

Pray for the smaller people groups

Pray that communities that can easily be overlooked because of their size will have meaningful opportunities to hear the Gospel.

For He will deliver the needy when he cries,
The poor also, and him who has no helper.

Psalm 72:12

Heavenly Father,

We bring Benin before You.

You know every people group. Every language. Every village. Every family. Every child. You know those who follow Jesus and those who have never heard His good news. Strengthen Your Church in Benin.

Give Christian leaders wisdom. Give workers perseverance. Give Christian Believers compassion for their communities. Reach the people of northern Benin. Protect communities experiencing insecurity.

Provide for displaced families. Give children opportunities to learn and grow. Open doors for the Gospel among communities where Christ is little known. May language barriers be overcome. May cultural barriers be crossed with wisdom and love. May churches become places of hope. May people who have never heard the good news encounter Jesus Christ.

In the Name of Jesus,
Amen.
