Pray For The Younger Generation

Indonesia has a huge population of young people growing up in a rapidly changing digital culture. Pray that teenagers and young adults will encounter biblical truth as they wrestle with identity, relationships, purpose, morality, and the future.

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

John 8:12

Pray For Christian Leaders

Pray for pastors, evangelists, missionaries, teachers, and lay leaders throughout Indonesia. Ask God to strengthen those carrying responsibility in difficult circumstances and to raise a new generation of leaders who combine theological depth with humility and compassion.

being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;

Philippians 1:6

Pray For Christians Who Are A Minority

Pray for Christian Believers who live where Christian presence is limited. Ask God to protect them from fear and isolation, and to give them wisdom in their relationships with neighbors and authorities.

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Romans 12:21

Pray For Unity Across The Archipelago

Pray for Javanese and Papuan Christians, Balinese and Batak Christian Believers, urban churches and rural congregations, older Christians and young disciples to recognize their shared identity in Christ.

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling;

Ephesians 4:4

Pray For The City Of Jakarta

Pray for Christian congregations in Jakarta to care for the city rather than retreat from it. Pray for Christian Believers working in government, technology, finance, education, medicine, media, and business to carry Christ’s character into their professions

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

Matthew 5:13

Region: Southeast Asia
Capital: Jakarta
Official Language: Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia)
Major Languages: Javanese, Sundanese, Madurese, Minangkabau, Bugis, Balinese, and hundreds of other regional languages
Religious Landscape: Predominantly Muslim, with significant Protestant and Catholic Christian communities, Hindu communities, Buddhists, Confucianists, and Indigenous belief traditions

Indonesia’s extraordinary ethnic and linguistic diversity is documented in the country’s population census work, which records hundreds of regional languages and numerous distinct ethnic communities across the archipelago.

A Nation Scattered Across The Sea

Indonesia is not one landscape. It is an archipelago stretching thousands of kilometers across the equatorial waters of Southeast Asia. Volcanic mountains rise above densely populated islands, tropical forests cover enormous areas of Kalimantan and Papua, rice fields surround villages in Java, coral reefs surround countless islands, and fishing communities live beside waters that connect rather than separate them.

Java alone is home to an enormous concentration of people, while other regions are home to communities separated by mountains, forests, and the ocean. Indonesia’s geography has helped produce extraordinary cultural diversity, with regional languages still spoken in homes and communities alongside Indonesian.

From the crowded streets of Jakarta to remote villages in Papua, from the Hindu traditions of Bali to Muslim communities in Sumatra and Sulawesi, Indonesia contains an astonishing variety of human stories.

Indonesia is home to hundreds of ethnic communities. The Javanese and Sundanese form two of the country’s largest ethnic groups, while communities such as the Madurese, Batak, Minangkabau, Bugis, Balinese, Dayak, Sasak, Toraja, Papuan peoples, and many others contribute to the country’s remarkable cultural mosaic.

Indonesia’s official language provides a common means of communication, yet regional languages remain deeply important within families and communities. Census research continues to document the richness of these languages across the islands. Behind the word Indonesia are people with different histories, traditions, and spiritual backgrounds.

Some live in enormous cities. Some live on small islands. Some live among rice fields. Some live deep within forests. Some communities have churches that have existed for generations, while others have had very little sustained opportunity to encounter the Gospel.

Pray for a nation where geographical distance will never become a barrier to the Gospel.

Indonesia contains some of the largest Muslim populations in the world, yet the spiritual reality of the country cannot be reduced to statistics. Millions of Indonesians identify with Islam as their religious tradition. For many, faith is intertwined with family, community, identity, and everyday life.

Some have never had a meaningful conversation with a Christian. Some have encountered Christianity primarily through history or popular culture. Some have heard Christian teaching but have never opened the Bible themselves. Some live in communities with very few followers of Jesus.

The country’s enormous geographical and linguistic diversity adds another dimension. An Indonesian-language message may still not communicate naturally within a remote community whose heart language is different.

Indonesia’s Christian population is substantial, yet the need for discipleship, contextualized Scripture, and Gospel witness remains enormous. Official data reported in recent religious-freedom reporting estimated Muslims at about 87 percent of the population, Protestants at 7.4 percent, and Roman Catholics at 3 percent, while also recognizing significant Hindu, Buddhist, and Indigenous belief communities.

Pray For The Many Islands

Indonesia’s geography creates extraordinary opportunities and extraordinary challenges. Pray for Christian workers and local churches serving communities separated by mountains, jungle, and ocean, particularly where travel and communication remain difficult.

God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.

Psalm 46:1

Pray For The Muslim Majority

Pray for Muslims across Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, and the many other islands. Ask God to create opportunities for respectful friendships and honest conversations about Jesus, especially among people who have never had a close Christian friend.

Seek the Lord while He may be found,
Call upon Him while He is near.

Isaiah 55:6

Pray For Indonesia’s Many Languages

Indonesia’s linguistic diversity means that effective discipleship cannot depend upon a single language. Pray for translators, writers, teachers, broadcasters, and local Christian Believers who can communicate Scripture naturally within regional languages.

so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;

Acts 17:27

Pray For Christian Witness

Pray for Indonesian Christians to represent Christ faithfully in workplaces, universities, schools, neighborhoods, and families. Ask God to give believers courage to speak when appropriate and wisdom to listen when listening is needed.

Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.

2 Corinthians 5:20

Pray For Bali

Bali’s Hindu heritage gives the island a distinctive spiritual and cultural identity within Indonesia. Pray for Balinese families, artists, students, business owners, and young people. Ask God to provide opportunities for Christians to demonstrate Jesus’ character with sensitivity and genuine friendship.

The Lord your God in your midst,
The Mighty One, will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.”

Zephaniah 3:17

Pray For Papua

Papua is home to extraordinary cultural and linguistic diversity, as well as large Christian communities. Pray for churches across Papua and for communities where Christian identity needs to be accompanied by deep biblical discipleship, reconciliation, and practical care.

Arise, shine;
For your light has come!
And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.

Isaiah 60:1

Pray For Java

Java is one of the world’s most densely populated islands and is home to an enormous share of Indonesia’s population. Cities such as Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta bring together students, professionals, businesses, universities, and communities from across the country.

Pray for Christians living in Java to develop meaningful relationships with neighbors who have little exposure to the Gospel. Pray for Christian students and professionals to become people whose integrity, compassion, and humility point others toward Christ.

Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.

Romans 14:19

Pray For Sumatra

Sumatra stretches across a vast landscape of mountains, forests, plantations, and coastal communities. The island is home to diverse peoples, including Acehnese, Batak, Minangkabau, Malay, and many other communities. Aceh has a distinctive legal and religious environment, with Islamic regulations applying in the province.

Pray for Christian Believers serving in environments where religious questions can be sensitive. Ask God to give Christians wisdom, patience, and genuine love for their neighbors.

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good;
Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

Psalm 34:8

Heavenly Father,

You know every island of Indonesia.

You know the crowded streets of Jakarta and the quiet villages beyond the cities. You know the mountains of Papua, the forests of Kalimantan, the rice fields of Java, the islands of Maluku, the communities of Sulawesi, the traditions of Bali, and the many peoples of Sumatra.

You know every language spoken in every home. You know every family, every student, every worker, and every child.

Thank you to the Christians who already serve throughout Indonesia. Strengthen them with wisdom, courage, and compassion. Give pastors depth in Your Word and give young Christian Believers mentors who will help them grow into mature disciples.

Open doors for the Gospel among communities where Jesus is little known. Give Christians meaningful friendships with Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and Indigenous communities. Give them the humility to listen carefully and the courage to speak faithfully when opportunities arise.

Raise up Indonesian missionaries who understand their own cultures and languages. Raise up translators who make Scripture accessible. Raise up teachers who equip churches. Raise up young people who will carry the Gospel into the next generation.

Bring peace where communities have experienced division. Bring healing where poverty and injustice have caused suffering. Give wisdom to leaders and protection to vulnerable communities.

May every island hear the good news. May every people have an opportunity to encounter Christ. May every generation discover the hope of the Gospel.

In the Name of Jesus Christ,
Amen.
